Secrets of successful remote employment: how to work from home and not get fired in a month

Remote employment has become a normal occurrence over the last several years. As with every type of employment, it has both advantages and disadvantages.

In this article, we will describe ways to stay productive and comfortable while working from home.

Create a personal workspace

The first thing to do is to create an optimal professional atmosphere in your home. We need a place to work, after all. While working on a couch with a laptop seems like a lucrative option, it is an inefficient one and, what is worse, affects both health and professional performance negatively.

Therefore, the first thing you must do is to create a comfortable workspace. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Pick a place in your home, one that is quiet, comfortable, and free for anything you might need. Be sure to keep it clean from any distractions, such as a TV, a gaming console, or a fridge. A separate room would be perfect, but if no such thing is possible, create yourself a workspace in a comfortable corner.
  • Prepare your workspace properly: a comfortable chair, table with enough place for a laptop, PC or other equipment needed, good lighting, and access to the internet. The best-case scenario would also feature ergonomic furniture.
  • Add some comfort to your workspace by decorating it. Any style is good as long as it is motivating and inspiring.

Create a schedule to stick to

One of the key aspects of remote employment is a clear schedule and boundaries between work and free time. It's important to keep track of time so that you don't mix work and personal matters. Here’s how to do that:

  • Set yourself clear work hours. Even though remote employment may have a lucrative option of a couch or a bed as, after all, no one is watching you and you're free to work anytime you want, it is still worth setting work hours.

  • Wake up before your work hours, use that free time for a routine to prepare yourself and get to work just in time.
  • Plan your tasks. Planning is key for effective time management.
  • Don’t forget to take short breaks to relax a bit and get that energy. That’s one good way to improve productivity!
  • Keep a healthy dietary plan. It is far easier than it seems. Set yourself a lunchtime.
  • Set individual boundaries and personal space (especially if you are not alone in your home). Explain to your family and friends why they should respect your work hours.
  • End your shift properly so that you won’t have to come back to work in your free time. This can help maintain work-life balance and avoid burnout. More information on burnout is available in our previous articles.

Self- and time-management

Self-management, as well as time management, plays an important role in remote employment. You should learn how to fully utilise your time, energy, knowledge, and skills and at the same time calmly cope with the stresses of modern life.

  • Train your self-discipline. Set yourself tasks and keep track of their completion. Determine your priorities. Follow the “Eat That Frog!” principle (a slogan from a well-known self-development book by Brian Tracy).
  • Set yourself short-term and long-term tasks to keep motivation high.
  • Experiment with various self-management and time-management strategies to pick one that suits you. For that, read books, watch podcasts, visit trainings, and learn from your colleagues.

Remember, self-development and self-improvement are one true way up the career ladder.

Communication and teamwork

Don’t forget that your remote employment doesn’t make you a lone player. Keep communicating with your colleagues, share experiences, don't be afraid to ask questions and learn how others achieved their success. Keep yourself updated on current events and projects.

Checklist for healthy remote employment

Let’s sum up this article. Remote employment is a unique possibility, which, however, requires effort and discipline. With a proper approach to the matter, it is possible to achieve unbelievably high productivity while keeping a life-work balance.
