Work-Life Balance: Myth or Reality?

"Work-life balance" — a beautiful phrase that’s become a must-have for any successful professional. But is it really possible to maintain that balance when emails come in at 10:45 PM and work thoughts won’t let you sleep? Let’s figure it out.

Work-Life Balance: Myth or Reality?

What balance really means and why it matters

Balance isn’t about perfectly splitting your time 50/50 — it’s about the personal feeling of harmony between your roles: employee, partner, parent, friend, and simply, human. It’s when you have space in your life for both achievements and a coffee with a friend, and for yourself — without guilt.

And it’s not just about mental health. People who feel balanced are more productive, less prone to burnout, and make better decisions. And above all — they’re happier.

Common balance myths to forget

Myth 1: Balance is a fixed state
In fact, it’s constantly shifting. One week may require more focus on work. The next — your child’s birthday or some much-needed recharging. That’s okay.

Myth 2: It depends solely on the employer
Sure, company policies matter. But placing all the responsibility for balance on external factors isn’t the way to go. Flexibility, boundary setting, and the ability to say “no” are part of the equation too.

Myth 3: It just means working less
Often the opposite is true. Someone who can prioritize and manage their time effectively doesn’t burn out — and doesn’t end up working late. Balance is more about quality than quantity.

How to find your balance

  • Assess where you are now: what’s your priority, what’s draining you, and what’s missing?

  • Set personal boundaries: not replying to work emails at night is okay. Turning down an extra project because you’ve planned a vacation — also okay.

  • Schedule personal time: a meet-up with a friend deserves a calendar slot just as much as a client call.

  • Learn to delegate — at work and at home. You’re not a robot. You don’t have to do everything alone.

  • Ask yourself regularly: “Am I okay with how things are going?” If not — adjust course.

Balance isn’t a fairytale or a myth. It’s a skill — one you can build and improve. It starts with being realistic about your life, but also respecting your own needs. Remember: you weren’t made just for KPIs and task managers. You were made for living.
